Spoils

The behir's haul, divided:

Item Properties Holder

Decanter of Endless Water High-volume fresh water Party

Camp

Downtime in the Underdark, run as maintenance:

  • Ubo foraged fungal blooms and subterranean flora (Nature 27) for supplies
  • Agatha performed religious rites (Religion 21), securing a divine advantage boon for the party to spend the following day
  • Dravona cooked — nourishment, but "devoid of the Weaver's grace," and no mechanical benefit
  • Kvothe worked on his chronicle of the North Watch
  • Caldris, being undead, stood watch without eating

The Masked Elf

At the crossroads of the main subterranean roads, the Way met them again — "a shadow from the sanctuary."

His warning: kuo-toa and Old One activity is way up. The enemy is no longer merely holding the City of the Glass Pool; they are hunting beyond its perimeter.

His advice on getting in:

Approach Verdict
Frontal assault Explicitly warned against — "get your affairs in order" first
Deception or disguise Most viable. Penetrate the outer works, locate high-value prisoners
Guerrilla warfare Destabilise internal infrastructure by targeting key combatants, not the population

He examined the Chain Breaker with visible reverence and confirmed it is what they think it is: it can shatter the mental shackles of those held in psychic thrall. Its primary use, he said, is killing the things it was built to fight, and freeing those in their thrall.

From there the party moved to the Windsong pedestal at the Sanctuary to rest before the march south.

The bulette

Marching order: Sylvara scouting ahead, Agatha with an everburning torch, then Caldris and Dravona, with Kvothe and Ubo — the latter on his celestial mount — in the rear.

A tremor, and a land shark came up through the floor.

  • Round 1. Ubo hit it with Slow. Its momentum still carried a bite into Agatha for 32 piercing.
  • Round 2. Agatha answered with the Flail of Fear, landing frightened on it.
  • The charm. With the beast faltering, Ubo cast a 4th-level Charm Monster and, backed by a 29 Nature check, pacified it — and sent it home to its lair in peace.

Then a long rest, to deal with Agatha's near-fatal wounds.

Attrition

The deep started charging rent:

  • Sacred spoilage. A critical failure on Agatha's religious observances blighted the party's provisions and rotted them early.
  • The lost record. Kvothe critically failed his chronicling. His ledger — the party's only written record of its own deeds — and his ink fell into a crevice and were lost.
  • Supply check. Down to six to eight rations a head. The mission changed shape: take Outpost Crystal not just for position, but for the enemy's food.

The siege of Outpost Crystal

Scouting showed a kuo-toa garrison under a chuul and a mind flayer commander.

  • Round 1. Sylvara opened with a lethal Assassinate. Agatha's Guiding Bolt lit the chuul up for everyone else.
  • Round 2. Sylvara landed 39 damage on the mind flayer. Ubo held his concentration against a psychic assault meant to drain his reserves. Caldris executed a kuo-toa.
  • Round 3. Ubo summoned three dire wolves onto the mind flayer. It used a thrall shield — psychically redirecting the wolves' killing strikes into a kuo-toa thrall, spending a servant to save itself — and then fled into the dark. Caldris cleared the remaining infantry with a Necrotic Burst.
  • Round 4. The chuul grappled and paralysed Agatha and started dragging her toward the cliff edge. Dravona put a 3rd-level Scorching Ray through it and saved her.

Outpost Crystal taken. Prayer of Healing and hit dice inside the captured walls.

The mind flayer commander escaped, and it knows who took the outpost and where they were headed.
