The Winter Wolf at Nenlast
20 February. In-world, the 29th and 30th of Autumn. Kvothe, Agatha, Ubo — and Dravona, joining.
Leaving Jocelin
Dravona burned the body. The plate and the greatsword were cached on the trail to be recovered later, and the party pressed on toward Nenlast.
The siege, seen from the water
At the treeline they counted six or seven groups of about ten patrolling the cart tracks through the farmland.
Kvothe put on his water coat and slipped into the lake to scout from below. Near the docks he found a dozen figures standing motionless on the lake bottom, waiting.
Something heard him. A voice said "Arise," and the drowned things started up out of the water. Kvothe swam hard for deeper water and watched the figure call them back. They returned to the bottom and resumed waiting.
That is the first sighting of Caldris, though the party did not have the name yet.
Word from inside
Agatha reached Leander by Sending:
"Agatha, Kvothe and Ubo here. We are near the forest and ready to help. Where are you and the townsfolk? How best can we help?"
"Very good. In the inn, with the remainder of the town. Enemy captain in the mill. Do not know full scope of enemy."
A second exchange set the plan — Agatha would open with Turn Undead near the inn so the party could push through and take the captain in the mill. Leander's reply carried the detail that mattered most:
"Very good, be careful. Enemy could have taken village at any time. Waiting on something, don't know what."
The siege was not a siege. It was a holding action, and nobody on the party's side knew what it was holding for.
Dravona
A woman of the Elk Heart tribe came to them in the forest and offered to help. Her name
was Dravona. She has been with them ever since.
Percy again, and the wolf
They camped in a briar patch. On second watch Kvothe heard something moving — quieter than the zombies, and very close. Sniffing.
He said, "Percival, are you here?"
Two eyes rose over the briars. "We have happened across each other again."
Percival was out with his pack, on patrol. He howled — and the howl came back from every direction around the camp.
Kvothe said he was with Ubo. The wolf answered that he was with the Mist Lord. Ubo told him he would not be forgiven for it.
Ubo recognised what they were dealing with: a winter wolf, dangerous in itself and prone to taking over ordinary wolf packs. Dravona made a considerable show of fire to frighten it, which did not work at all. It invited them to come out of the briar patch.
Then Ubo caught the tail end of the howl, and it was a sentence:
"Caldris, let them know we have found the intruders."
The fight and the fog
They came out and were not attacked. Running for the lake, they saw shapes in the trees, then glowing eyes ahead of them and all around.
They killed the wolves and the dire wolves. The winter wolf escaped.
They put up a Tiny Hut. On second watch Ubo noticed mist beginning to gather around them. They took the rest in full anyway.
Then the womp womp hit.
Everyone failed the save except Dravona.
