The Road to Nenlast
6 February. In-world, the 28th and 29th of Autumn. Kvothe, Agatha, Ubo, Jocelin.
Two days until the emissary speaks
The council was set for the 30th of Autumn, and Mira Ashford had agreed to stall it as long as she could — an extra day or two, maybe three.
What she wanted in return was something real: break the siege of Nenlast. Leander was trapped inside it, which Agatha had not known until Mira told her, and which settled the matter.
The party slipped out of the Throne of Antlers at first light.
Percival
A day tracking through the woods toward Nenlast turned up almost nothing. The forest was empty and quiet. They found a concealed camp, well sited, with nobody in it.
Then Jocelin heard rustling overhead. Cat-like eyes looked down at her — housecat-sized. It informed her, with some indignation, that it was not a cat, that its name was Percival, and that they were in its nest.
It came down far enough to show a long neck and a greenish, lizard-like head. Jocelin identified it as a pseudodragon and set about simultaneously apologising to it and needling it about whether she might pet it and whether they were friends now.
At the word Nenlast it became interested, and delivered its assessment: they were all going to die. Pressed for detail it had little, but it put the besieging force at more than fifty and fewer than a hundred undead.
It let them stay the night. By morning Jocelin was calling him Percy, and it stuck.
The wraiths
29th of Autumn. Agatha summoned a panther mount and the party moved on.
Troops of skeletons in rusted armour and a horde of zombies were waiting on the path, with mist that surrounded them and moved with them. Among the zombies was one in far better armour, carrying a greatsword.
The things in the mist did not walk. They floated, and their strikes drained not just hit points but maximum hit points. Wraiths.
- Agatha's Turn Undead was decisive. It broke the large hordes outright and sent them running into the forest
- Ubo's Moonbeam ground down what stayed
- The wraith ignored everyone else and worked on Jocelin
Her maximum hit points fell to 11, then kept falling. When they reached zero, she died.
Dead dead
Agatha did not have Revivify prepared.
There was no bringing her back. Jocelin — Marshal 7, sworn Rider of the Watch, the party's only Silver Raven — was gone permanently.
The first player character death of the campaign.
What she was carrying
| The Oathbow | The white bow from the deep tunnels that had accepted only her |
| +1 Plate Mail | The armour that transformed her |
| +1 Bastard Sword | |
| Family signet ring | Never identified to a house |
| Potion of resistance, 2 healing potions | |
| 475 gp, 33 pp, 170 sp, 378 cp |
The plate and the sword were cached on the trail to be recovered later. Nobody has been back for them.
Jocelin's player rolled a new character: a human of the Elk Heart tribe, who joins the next session.
